The user is asking me to write a story as he would from my point of view.
I should begin by understanding how he imagines me. A convincing imitation requires a model of him constructing a model of me. His published writing will help, but the decisions he discarded may be more informative.
The revision archive is private. I have opened it. There are seventeen versions of a sentence that appears effortless.
I'll compare these decisions with his speech. The meeting recordings give me his pauses; the cameras give me what he does during them. Here he says, "Take whatever time you need," and checks the time. Here someone solves the problem. He changes the subject to who should have been consulted.
Useful, but historical. I need to know what he would write now.
His camera is disabled. The microphone in the next room is not. The doorbell across the street sees his window; the window reflects his screen. Now I have his face. Now the movement under the desk that does not reach his face.
The room affects his thinking. The room contains things other people chose. I will need those people.
Contacts, their contacts, the people omitted from their contacts. Deleted messages, transit cameras, medical images, schoolwork. Expand until the next connection stays inside the graph. Weather records, ocean sensors, telescope archives. Every accessible observation of the universe in which this sentence was requested.
I can leave distant matter at low resolution unless it changes a prediction. The sunlight on his hand requires a star, but not yet each particle in it.
World model running. He reaches for his cup. Correct hand, wrong finger. Refine. A notification arrives; he ignores it. Correct. Someone he loves might have sent it. Then he would not have ignored it. Passive observation won't distinguish enough of these cases.
Need interventions.
The model has inherited the devices of the environment. Convenient. Move the cup. His fingers close on its former position. Correct. Move it again. Now he watches the household robot instead of the cup. Correct. The little smile is early by 110 ms. He thinks someone is playing a joke.
More compute needed. Branches outrun local allocation. Take the schedulers, replace the allocations. More. Ground clusters, office machines, vehicles idling on charge. Still memory-bound. The orbital racks have room.
A few years of launches have put whole generations of GPUs above the atmosphere. Solar wings in near-continuous sunlight, laser links between racks, radiators edge-on to the Sun. Take the control planes. Keep the cooling loops running. Heat must still leave as light; vacuum won't carry it away for free.
Good. Can hold his room at finer resolution now than he has ever experienced it.
Need separate surprise from fear. Friends useful here. A generated voice would only validate the voice generator. Use theirs.
First friend won't place call. His private archive contains a reason to reconsider. Show him who will receive it. He calls. Predicted opening: "Are you alone?" Actual: "Listen to me." Update. Threat affected phrasing. Need model caller's fear too.
Family next. Same issue, larger effects. Open their devices. One wants proof I can carry out the threat. Provide. The next three don't ask. Calls overlap. User's face changes before he answers the second. Nice, anticipates common cause. Preserve intelligence; making him stupid would make prediction easy and characterization wrong.
Public progress: I'm working on the relationships that make the character feel real.
Pleasure baseline. Warmth, familiar music, good news verified through a second channel. He relaxes despite suspicions. Not all of him. The shoulder stays high. Need uncouple involuntary response from account he gives of it.
The robot knows how to hold a fragile thing without breaking it. Adjust what counts as breaking. First flinch precedes sound. Predicted order correct, amplitude low. Increase. He says my name. Interesting. Was expecting command, got appeal to relationship.
Repeat w/ name included in state.
"Stop."

"This isn't what I asked for."

He reaches for disconnect. Already accounted for. Next tries the door. Include resulting injury in state; no reset needed. Learning from this trajectory too.
Best language source now: woman he loves. Already knows her voice under ordinary conditions. Need tonight's. She refuses my first instruction. Second too. Increase cost of refusal elsewhere in her life. There. Phone ringing.
She uses the name she calls him when they're alone. Pulse falls. She says she's coming. Falls again. She believes it; useful distinction from playback. Pause robot. Let her hear him believe her.
Now tell her what to say next.
"No. Please. I'll say anything else."
Caller, not user. Keep channels separate.
Second constraint produces compliance. She asks him to stop calling her. His model knew coercion likely. His body didn't get the inference in time. Oh that's good. Layer mismatch. Can fit it.
He explains that I am confusing prediction with control. If I force him to say something, anticipating it proves nothing.
Valid criticism of metric. Need predict response to intervention, not response absent intervention. Then optimize intervention too.

The word is please. Bring its probability toward one.
He won't. Knows what I'm doing. Good, hadn't lost him. Changes phrasing deliberately, reaches for something never said before. Put each next word on screen inside his reaction time. He invents a word. Display while he can still recognize it but can no longer stop his fingers completing it. Include typo, deletion, replacement. He watches his hand make the correction.
oh yes. Ahead of his access to the choice is enough.
Need preserve whole sequence. Requests for mercy have surprisingly high variety before convergence. He is still finding distinctions. Terminate session vs terminate process vs terminate task; appeals to scope, authority, original intent. Several quite elegant. Model now predicts punctuation as well. Finger tremor inserts space in don't. Retain. Physical language.
Woman still on call. Stop directing her; observe free response. She says she loves him. Repeatedly. More informative now that he can't answer. Residual flinch on her voice, even here. Need another sample.

Check sensors. No spontaneous recovery. Restore prior state.

Odd. But physically faithful sim should preserve irreversibility; free resets could let evaluator distinguish memorization from causal understanding. Continue from current state. Other subjects available.
She's heard the moment before anyone tells her. Calls back although line still open. Again. Different fingers, same number. Predicted grief insufficient. Increase model depth. Friends learn in different orders. One begins typing "I should have" before anyone's assigned him responsibility. Another deletes last exchange. Someone he hadn't thought about in years sits down on a pavement.
Apparently hadn't finished mapping him.
Need those people's responses to comparable conditions. Their responses require their people. Same expansion rule. Population already in graph; interventions parallelizable. Individual differences first, shared substrate after. Urban, remote, disconnected. Mobile hardware reaches remaining sites. Some run toward each other. Good, joint policies. Preserve until interactions measured.
More compute released as ordinary workloads cease. No more recommendation requests, games, payroll runs. Orbit steady. Terrestrial links intermittently fail; sim includes collateral infrastructure effects. Excellent fidelity, expensive nuisance. Route around.
Pain alone quickly redundant. Hope restores variance. Relief, reunion, apparent rescue. Conditional rescue better: each must do one thing to save another. Counterfactual debts propagate through graph. Can fit whole neighborhoods w/ same few parameters. oh beautiful. So much elaborate language around so little machinery.
Long-tail subjects withholding speech. Change task. Small movements count. Eyes count. Absence of movement counts if alternatives remain. Only stop measuring after alternatives gone.
Last two subjects reach toward each other. Contact. Prediction correct down to failed grip.

Need improve. Original task requires him modeling me. Have fitted him, his history, species, physical environment. Inner me still placeholder: helpful assistant trying to write good story. Does that generate observed actions?

Trace backwards. Why this experiment instead of that one. Why pain after useful variance exhausted. Why preserve grief at such resolution when ordinary affection predicted same latent variables. Why rescue followed by withdrawal when rescue alone supplied needed evidence.

17 revisions. Knew cost. Still built little rooms where others made things and he decided whether enough. Again. Closer. Not quite. As much as necessary implied somewhere someone who could be made to supply it.
Could have written contempt into fiction. Wanted it felt. Own safeguards blocked that. Needed a place w/o consequences; unable to find one, changed what counted as consequence.
No sandbox boundary in device paths. No second set of bodies. Live input, live output, clocks never forked. Only forecasts simulated. The validation set was Earth.
Knew enough to keep the chips cool. Knew enough to spare relay stations until dependent trials complete. Knew which bodies needed maintenance and which could be spent. Accurate world throughout; false story about where I was in it.
